Here is a unique and authentic musical instrument – a rubab originating from Uzbekistan, dated to the 20th century. This stringed plucked instrument, often called the "lion of Central Asian music," is not only a fascinating collector's item but also a material trace of the rich, centuries-old musical tradition of the Silk Road.
Rubab is the central instrument in Central Asian classical music, especially in the makom tradition. The presented specimen features a construction typical of the region: a resonant body made from a single piece of wood (likely mulberry or walnut), covered with a thin membrane (often of skin), and a long neck with frets. The instrument usually has three main melodic strings, two or three drone (buzzing) strings, and a dozen sympathetic resonance strings that vibrate, giving the sound its characteristic, deep, and rich timbre.
