Burlwood (also known as root burl) is a special, highly prized type of wood, characterized by its unique, wavy, and knotty grain. It occurs in the form of growths on the trunks of birch, maple, or poplar trees. In 19th-century Poland and Europe, burlwood was considered a luxury material – elegant boxes, caskets, and small pieces of furniture made of burlwood adorned the boudoirs of the aristocracy and wealthy bourgeoisie. The natural pattern of the wood was often left without additional polychrome, so as not to overwhelm its natural beauty.
Our box is an example of subtle elegance and solid workmanship. It presents as follows:
- Material: Burlwood with a distinct, decorative grain, possibly with an addition of another wood species on the lid or base.
- Condition: For its 19th-century age, the condition is very good. Natural cracks and fissures in the wood are visible – they are not defects but evidence of the item's authenticity and age. No major losses or conservation interventions. The surface retains its original patina.
