The flask, often called "kamandalu" or a container for holy water, was an indispensable attribute of pilgrims, ascetics (sadhus), and wandering holy men of Hinduism. It was used to store water from sacred rivers, such as the Ganges, or to collect alms in the form of water and food. Owning it was a sign of renunciation of material goods and following the spiritual path.
